Gayà scores late equaliser for Spain
José Luis Gayà was the man of the hour for Spain in their UEFA Nations League game against Germany, striking in the 95th minute to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw.
The fullback played every minute of the game, and hunted down a loose ball inside the six-yard-box to convert in the dying moments.
Coach Luis Enrique, starting his second spell in charge of the Spain national team, entrusted Gayà with the coveted left back spot, for which he will compete with Jordi Alba, Juan Bernat and other candidates.
“The goal is a reward for all of the work that everybody has done,” said Gayà to Spanish TV channel Teledeporte after the final whistle. “We know that it’s a difficult time, with the pace not having picked up, but it didn’t look like that. It was a game with a high pace; Germany are very strong.”
“We have many things to improve, but we carried out the ideas the coach had. The important thing is that we scored, and that we leave here with a point -a fairer result than if we had lost.”
